Multi-billionaire and Tesla CEO Elon Musk has in a meeting with Twitter employees hinted at potential job cuts if his $44bn (£35.8bn) takeover bid for the social media company is successful.

During his virtual address to Twitter workers, Elon Musk also touched on growth, saying he’d like to see Twitter reach a billion users — roughly four times its current user base and anonymity, where he earlier created a stir when he said he wants to “verify all humans” on the service. At the meeting, he clarified that this does not mean he wants to have everyone on Twitter use their real names, like on Facebook, since pseudonyms can allow people to express their political views freely, according to The New York Times.

Even though Musk didn’t explicitly talk about job cuts, the billionaire's comments did hint at such possibilities in the near future. When employees asked Musk if layoffs are planned for the future, he said “It depends. The company does need to get healthy".

During the internal meeting, Musk also said that there has to be some rationalization of headcount or else Twitter won’t be able to grow in the future. “Anyone who is a signification contributor has nothing to worry about,” he further added. Musk also talked about work from home setup, the buyout deal and much more during the meeting.
